The year that was - was quite a year

Like most people I tend to stop and take stock of my life and profession at this time of year. It's certainly been quite a year.

We've been intimately involved in the credit crunch recovery, where our capabilities in talent management and re-skilling have come to the fore. At the same time we have had to deal with employee relations challenges which here in the UK has seen Tube Workers, Mail Operatives and airline staff reaping havoc on the public (and on HR conferences in London). Just in the last few days we have seen the UK government introduce a new tax regime for "bankers" bonuses and health reform becoming a reality in the USA (at last!).

As a professional group HR has made some progress and it is fantastic to see the possibilities of Web 2.0 being mentioned more and more in the press explicitly linked to HR activities.

What does this all mean for 2010? It's difficult to be definitive about this as we are looking at a very complex beast here. However, I have some aspirations for HR (and Leadership) which if we edge towards will realise commercial and personal benefits:

Free Wi-Fi introduced country wide
Post-graduate level Business Psychology seen as a prerequisite for a successful career in HR and the CIPD merges with the British Psychological Society
Trade Unions publish expense rates and spend by officials
Every leader seen to be applying the principles detailed in "Made to Stick" in thier organisations
Goal setting and typing skills mandated in all schools
David Ulrich appears on "I'm a celebrity"
HR seen as THE Web 2.0 experts

Reminds me of a song by the Everly Bothers, "Dream, dream, dream...."
